Beauvalet, or, Chevalier de Saint-Victor (1780-1857) was a French artist of whom little is known. He was born in Paris, France & described himself as "Peintre Minerologiste breveté" (a patented mineralogist painter), alluding to his inventions of pigments with uniquely lustrous effect and glossy surface. After a collection three-year sojourn in Italy, Beauvalet returned to France in 1836 and began to publish books on artist techniques and portfolios of various subjects such as calligraphy and Japanese pottery. At the same time, he produced a collection of plates of Greek and Etruscan style vases and vessels under the title Vases grecs et étrusques, which is considered Beauvalets most original contribution to, and most inventive application of the pochoir (stencil) process for printmaking. The only two known written works Beauvalet has signed his name to are this work on miniature water-color techniques & Manuel de peinture orientale et Chinoise en relief (1832). Beauvalet claimed his technique is original drawing rather than mechanical drawing - he used an intricate and unique sequence of stencils, colored with the saturated tones and metallic pigments by himself.
Quite a scarce work, modestly restored as a reading copy. Affordable due to imperfections.
