In July 1931, Vladimir Wiese led an expedition on the icebreaker “Malygin” to Franz Josef Land and the northern part of the Kara Sea, under the command of Captain D.T. Chertkhov. Other members included technicians (among them Umberto Nobile) whose mission was to locate a suitable location for a Soviet seaplane base in Franz Josef Land. During this expedition, the German airship “Graf Zeppelin” had a memorable rendezvous with the “Malygin” at Bukhta Tikhaya on Hooker Island, Franz Josef Land, on July 27, 1931.

Rare set of 2 documents relating to this expedition, addressed to the expedition leader V. Wiese and franked with the 4 stamps of the July 1931 airmail series:

- A postcard, franked with the 30 kopecks and 1 ruble values of the series, with stamps of departure from Leningrad on July 25, 1931 by the Graf Zeppelin and of arrival on the "Malygin" on July 27, 1931.

- A letter, franked with the values 35 kopecks and 2 rubles of the series, with stamps of departure from Leningrad on July 25, 1931 by the Graf Zeppelin and arrival on the “Malygin” on July 27, 1931.

Im Juli 1931 leitete Vladimir Wiese eine Expedition auf dem Eisbrecher „Malygin“ zum Franz-Josef-Land und dem nördlichen Teil der Karasee unter dem Kommando von Kapitän D.T.. Chertkhov. Zu den anderen Mitgliedern gehörten Techniker (unter ihnen Umberto Nobile), deren Aufgabe es war, einen geeigneten Ort für einen sowjetischen Wasserflugzeugstützpunkt in Franz-Josef-Land zu finden. Während dieser Expedition hatte das deutsche Luftschiff „Graf Zeppelin“ am 27. Juli 1931 in Buchta Tichaja auf Hooker Island, Franz-Josef-Land, ein denkwürdiges Rendezvous mit der „Malygin“.
